In lieu of a longer, more detailed post about what I’ve been up to lately, I’m posting here some information about my first grant project at site.
In the seven months that I’ve been at my site working with the teachers and students at my school, I’ve noticed a serious lack of resources. Currently the only resources available to all teachers and students are two out-of-date English-Ukrainian/Ukrainian-English dictionaries. Therefore, with the help and support of my colleagues, I’ve written a grant that will help us create a resource center in the English department’s primary classroom. The resource center will consist of a variety of books–dictionaries, thesauruses, home-reading books, and other supplementary materials that will help both the teachers and the students.
My grant is considered a “Partnership” grant through Peace Corps. In the most basic way, what that means is that in order for my grant to be funded, my project must receive donations from kind and willing partners. My hope is that you will consider donating in some way to this project–not only would it mean a great deal to me, but it would mean a great deal to my community here. The current amount needed is $680.00. Naturally, I understand that not everbody is in a position to donate a large amount of money, and so I would like to assure you that even the smallest donation would be helpful to us. Funding for my project is not guaranteed–if we don’t receive the necessary amount of money, there is no guarantee that we can still implement the project.
Although funding isn’t necessarily guaranteed through a Partnership grant, I still think that raising money for volunteer projects in this way is an incredibly worthwhile way to obtain grant funds. The benefit, I believe, is that each person back in the States who has donated to my project will be forever connected with my school here in Ukraine. I can promise you that this resource center will make a huge difference in the lives of my colleagues and students–they’re amazingly motivated people who are eager to learn, and by helping us with this project, you’ll be helping to create more possibilities and opportunities for them.
You can read more about the project here, on Peace Corps’ website, and if you decide to donate, you can do so here.
